Catan Rebooted

If you have been a following for some time on this blog, you will know that Catan is the game that started it all for me. It is one of my favorite board games and definitely one of the my favorite digital board games too.   Well the folks behind Catan have gone and basically rebooted the whole Catan family of games (the online aspect only).

Now if you want to play Catan, you will have one account and can access the game on iOS, Android, Steam, Amazon and browser at Catan Universe.

This is a great idea. Now I can easily access the game anywhere and I do not need to purchase different copies for different platforms. I tested the game on Steam for this posting.

When you first begin, you will need to setup your profile. The game provides a new tutorial on how to do this and will help walk you through it.  You will also create your avatar and you will have tons of options. Under your profile you can modify your avatar, check out your statistics, see what expansions you own, etc.  You can also join a guild, connect with friends, access a Catan Almanac, change the graphic and sound options.

Now on the top right hand corner is a link to the shop. Here you can purchase Catan gold. This in game currency can be used to purchase more expansions, different avatars, scrolls, and bundle packs. Now the game is free to download and play, but you will need Catan gold to unlock the base game forever and any of the expansions.  I am not sure how you earn gold in the game but from what I have read only, you will probably need to invest some real money into the game.

Right now Catan Universe includes the Catan board game, the Cities and Knights and Seafarers expansions and the card game Rivals for Catan. A brand-new game version Catan – Rise of the Inkas will be available from fall 2018.

My thoughts on the game. The graphics on the PC are ok, it took me a bit of figuring out what the best options were for my system. I have some concerns how it will play on a mobile device. I think it might be too much for a phone but could work on a tablet.  The speed and smoothness of the game was ok, again it seemed a bit choppy for me. The in game chat is a bit clunky too. Also the in-game gold/shop does not have much explanation to it so takes some time to figure it out.

Overall I like the idea behind Catan Universe and will curious to see how it grows, improves, and expands. If you are a Catan player, download the game and see if you enjoy the new experience.

Faeria – Card Game has Launched

About six months ago I got early access to Faeria, a Hearthstone like collectible card game on Steam. Well the game has officially launched and I recommend you download it today.

Faeria is available on Steam and for iOS devices; with the Android version hopefully coming soon. The game plays very much like Hearthsone, so if you are familiar with the popular game from Blizzard, then you will have no problems getting into this game.

For the specific details, head over to the official announcement post.

I have really enjoyed playing and testing the game over the last few months. The developers have been doing a great job listening to the community and updating the game. I really liked when I first started but now I love. If I had to use one word to describe the game, it would be beautiful. The graphics, musics, gameplay are excellent.

With the official launch, I was able to keep my account and progress which is nice. With that in mind, I cannot comment on what a new player would experience but I am sure they would not have any problems getting into the game. From what I say, the game provides plenty of directions on what to do and makes you want to level up to unlock new content.

The game has solo content, PVP (casual and ranked), and Pandora game modes. You can craft cards, earn custom card backs, and more.

I like how the game was created so you can play on the computer and/or mobile devices. I also like how the developers had eSports in mind as they developed it.

I am not going to go into a full review here, just wanted to let everyone know that the Faeria is now live and definitely worth a look.

For a look on how the game has progressed and its community, take a look at this post.

Heroes of Normandie [iOS, Steam Game]

Do you enjoy electronic boards games like me? Well Slitherine recently released Heroes of Normandie for iOS and it is definitely one you should look into. The game has been available for some time on Steam.

In the game you are the commander of a small squad of troops during the D-Day invasion. You will set up your squad from the cards available. You will then place them on the board. Each game will have different objectives. Needles to say, this is a turned base strategy game. I did get a preview copy and have just got into it.  The graphics, gameplay and board layout are all well done.

The game comes with a number of nice options:

  • Single Player
  • Multiplayer
  • Difficulty Setting
  • Game Editor
  • Player Accounts
  • Player Ranking
  • One expansion currently available and with another on the way

One of my favorite sites, Pocket Tactics, has done a review of the game and also has done an interview with the team behind the game.  I recommend both posts to get a nice overview of this great game.

Check out the trailer and download links below.

Boomzap Launches Kickstarter For New Expansion

Boomzap, the folks behind Legends of Callasia have just launched a Kickstarter campaign to get funding to add a new expansion to the game. Check out the video below.

About the game:

Legends of Callasia is a world conquest game inspired by classic turn-based strategy games like Civilization, Heroes of Might & Magic, and Risk. Players control heroes from their chosen faction, occupy territories, and control kingdoms in a tabletop-style map with bonus cards that may alter the course of battle. Its original simultaneous gameplay mechanic keeps games moving quickly, even in multiplayer mode while adding deep strategy elements.

About the expansion:

“Legends of Callasia: The Stoneborne” The expansion will include content based on players’ feedback: new heroes, cards, maps, and campaigns for the formerly non-playable faction, the Dwarves. The story of Stoneborne will follow their journey underground and their encounters with a new enemy, the Cavespawn.

My thoughts…..

This is a Steam game currently, but there are plans to port it to mobile (hopefully soon). 🙂 I am currently playing/reviewing the game and it is a lot of fun.I will have a more in depth review, once I get back from vacation. 🙂

Overall the game is packed with a ton of options. Once you setup a profile, you can play:

  • Multiplayer games
  • A variety of different skirmishes – a total of 35
  • 30 campaigns
  • Three Factions to choose from: Hundred Kingdoms, Faeborne, and Revenant
  • Over 25 Heroes with different classes, traits, and bonus cards

This game is worth the price and this expansion should just adds to the overall enjoyment and options of the game.

Faeria – Strategy Card Game

Today is the first Steam game review. This past weekend the developer held a free to play event so that more could appreciate the game. The bottom line, if you enjoy Hearthstone, then you will like this game.

The game is currently available on Steam and is paid to play. Later this year, it will be coming to mobile, and will be free to play. (Disclosure: The developer provided a review copy of the game and a coupon for the Full Card Collection.)

In the game, you will battle your opponent with the cards in your deck, like Hearthstone but the key difference is that there is a land component to the game. There are 5 types of land and 5 corresponding card races. Each type has its own unique characteristic or battle style. As you play your cards, you will need to place land tiles.

Each turn includes the following actions:

  • placing land/drawing 2 cards/getting 1 mana
  • placing cards you have enough mana to play
  • move cards on the board and attack your opponent

The game comes with a nicely done tutorial to help explain the different aspects of the game. Overall it is easy to play and you should not have any problems getting the rules down.

There are 3 game modes:

  • Solo  – you can practice with your deck(s) and do some campaigns to unlock more cards
  • Battle  – play against others online, either rank or unranked play
  • Pandora – need to be level 5 to enter, an online battle events

The game mechanics are good and gameplay is very smooth. The game is well designed and very fun. I enjoyed the added land aspect to this card game.

After completing the initial campaigns and putting together my first deck, the only concern I had was the cards themselves. In the game you can earn some cards but right now it seems the fastest or best way to get cards is to purchase them. Getting the full collection is $50 USD and I would recommend this if you are serious about the game. With this one purchase you are totally set to go  and can create some great decks.

The game does not provide a lot of guidance on deck building but there are many websites out there to provide guidance. There is some many options in deck creation, as in Hearthstone, so I would recommend some reading. This is the one aspect I found a bit frustrating.

The game has been online for some time and has a very active community so new players should be able to get the advice and guidance they need.

Again, I really have enjoyed playing this game and look forward to moving up the ranks and trying different decks. I also am looking forward to seeing this on mobile, so I can play at work! 🙂

I really cannot say enough good things to say about Faeria. There is still a lot I could write about the game but I think you need to go experience for yourself.  It is a sound game and well worth the investment. Enjoy.
