Taking Notes on your iPad – Penultimate [App Review]

One of the reason I have an iPad mini is so I do not have to carry paper and pen around anymore. One of my favorite and most used apps is Evernote. So when I found out there was an app that combined Evernote with note taking, I knew I had to try it. Enter Penultimate.

Penultimate is a handwriting, note taking app what will sync with your current Evernote account. If you are a big Evernote user and have an iPad, you should try this free app. It is unknown at this time if the app is coming to Android.

Penultimate is simple app. When you first start you can use it as is or you can connect to your current Evernote account. A new notebook is created  (which you can name whatever you wish) then that notebook, with the pages inside, sync to your account.  The material you sync will be available on all devices but as an image.

The free app comes with 3 styles of paper (graph, lined, and plain). You can purchase additional styles from the in app Paper Shop. If you are a premium Evernote member you get them free. With the app you can easily add photos, clipboard material, and of course your handwritten notes.  I did not see a feature where you can type on the page. You can easily  change the pen ink style and color.

I love this app and the main reason for me is because its connection with Evernote. Being able to take handwritten notes and then sync them across my account and devices is a big plus in my mind.  For more information, check out the video below or the online users guide.

Wunderlist for Android and iOS is Wonderful (App Review)

App Name: Wunderlist – To-do & Task

Developer6 Wunderkinder GmbH

Cost: Free / Pro $4.99 USD/mo

Market: Google, iTunes

Review:

Now that Astrid is gone, what app or service should you use to manage your tasks or to-do-lists? There are a ton of them out there and my recommendation is to try them first. Most are free, so you can see the features each has and how they fit your needs. After playing around with a few of them, I decided to use Wunderlist. To be honest, I wish I had used them from the get go.

For me I needed a task management setup that had the following requirements:

  • Free
  • Has a web interface (Chrome plugin a bonus)
  • Android and iOS apps that sync to the website
  • Ability to create folders or groupings based
  • Ability to print tasks

Wunderlist has all of these and more, and it only took me a few minutes to setup my account and organize my tasks. I used Wunderlist to organize my app reviews, web projects, and even my scouting activities. I create a folder for each set of tasks (Android app reviews, iOS app reviews, Press releases, etc.) and then create a specific task for each app I need to cover.

You can set due dates, priorities, sub tasks, reminders for each item. It is very easy to reorganize your lists and task and when one is done, just cross it off the list.  If you need print your tasks,  you can and they are printed out  grouped by folder. I never could get Astrid to do that.

The interface of the Wunderlist website is nice and clean and very easy to use. Both the Android and iOS apps look great, sync easily with the site, and have all the same functionality as the web site.

For those that need more, there is a pro version of the service. With the pro version, you can assign tasks, have unlimited sub tasks, attach files (coming soon) and have some other background images.

Check out the video below and if you are looking for a great mobile app to help you keep track of your tasks and to-do-lists, give Wunderlist a try.

Captain Dash – the Ultimate Dashboard [iOS]

Captain Dash launches pivotal dashboard app that allows marketers to tackle Big Data in the cloud

Captain Dash, French specialist in developing decision-making tools for the marketing world, has launched their long-awaited iOS app. By leveraging Hadoop and cloud architecture, this app answers the problems and priorities of marketers today: tackling Big Data, the cloud, and mobile.

Captain Dash, the award-winning French startup specializing in Big Data solutions, has launched their iOS application, optimized for iPads and accessible on the App Store worldwide. This announcement follows their success with a Windows 8 application, with almost 6,000 users, and can become a critical game-changer in today’s business world.

Social media and digital data is a must for marketers today. What if this different data could be visualized in one place, in the palm of the hand? What if this data could be updated in real-time and synchronized in the cloud? What if this data could be explored and understood in a visual way? Enter Captain Dash.

The app allows the user to connect a variety of data sources, most notably social media and digital sources such as Facebook, Twitter, Foursquare, Google Analytics, and Atlas. The user can then track KPIs and metrics of their choosing on one screen. The uniqueness of Captain Dash stands in the ability to synchronize and correlate multiple factors on a single dashboard: social, web traffic, sales, marketing spending, etc.

The user can create multiple dashboards with multiple sets and fill them with the metrics that are important to the business. What’s more, the user can take any and all of this data and feed them to the Explorer, where stunning graphs and visualizations are created instantly.  Customize everything, from the organization of the dashboards to the color palette of the visualizations.  The possibilities and potential are limitless. Thanks to Hadoop, Captain Dash can be the first to boast big data analytics in tandem with using the cloud and staying mobile, all the while with a sexy and lean interface.

Connect public pages as well as private to be able to assess a company’s performance right next to its competition. This lets users react to market events in real-time, understand the areas they need to improve, and rejoice in seeing performance. This is what Captain Dash does: big data, real-time, updated and synchronized automatically. Explore data to gain insight and make the best decisions, all from a unique mobile experience.

Pricing

The app is “freemium”, therefore free to connect up to 20 data sources. Any user can have a comprehensive view of their social activity on Facebook, Twitter, Foursquare, and other networks. Once 20 sources are reached, an upgrade is needed to continue exploring.

Future

Captain Dash will progressively bring some additional features such as mapping, integration of Excel, additional connectors such as Instagram and Pinterest, and later in the year, the development of an SDK that would simplify the integration of advanced features (algorithms) by external partners.

Company-wise, Captain Dash is currently working on opening up an office in NYC that would spearhead US operations. The company is also working on an additional fundraising to get the company to the next phase.

What does this mean for small business?

Probably the most exciting thing about this launch is the opportunity that this app presents to SMBs, smaller marketing agencies, and the freelance social media marketers. 20 connectors for free is an unbelievable amount that provides more than enough for the smaller consumer. For example, an SMB normally has no more than a website (Google Analytics), a Facebook brand page, a Twitter page, perhaps a Foursquare venue if they are a restaurant or a store, and maybe an Atlas account if they use paid ads. This leaves 15 connectors to perhaps add in competitor data; the app allows the user to connect any public Facebook page, Twitter handle, or Foursquare venue and compare data.

About Captain Dash

The company was founded in 2010 by Gilles Babinet and Bruno Walther and boasts approximately 30 employees split between Paris and Tunis. Babinet has successfully led multiple startups with lucrative exits such as Musiwave, while also heading the Digital Agenda in the European Commission. Walther, also a successful serial entrepreneur, was previously the President and CEO of OgilvyOne Worldwide, a customer engagement agency. The leadership team also includes CTO Nicolas Thiebaud and CXO Kilian Bazin.
