Gumtree.com,  the UK classifieds website, has released new improvements to its Android App. The updated app offers a better user experience for tablet users and a variety of new features across all devices.  The app is now fully responsive to a user’s screen size.

The new update also allows users to customize their searched ads to display prominent details such as images, item details, description, seller and length of time with Gumtree; improving user interface and confidence in the seller.

Other features that have been optimized for the customer in the new 1.67.1 version include:

  • Eye-catching gallery view of search results making it easier to browse items in key categories like Motors and For Sale
  • Split screen view of search results on tablet devices in landscape making it quicker and easier to browse items on the left and see the ad details on the right of the screen
  • Ability to customize the latest ads section to their favorite category

The app is similar Price Patrol’s main website, where it uses your current location to search for the best deals for the products you are searching for in your area. Before you begin window shopping, you will be prompted to login or create an account and activate your smartphone’s location access in order for the Price Patrol app to function properly. Once you click on a product that you might have been looking for, the app will break down the logistics of the item’s price, description and distance away from item location.

Save your favorite products to your personal Radar, where you can also adjust search radius, keywords, category and price range and share the item to other people who are interested in the buying the product in the further for research purposes. Each product link also displays a “Get Directions” tab, which will open a GPS navigation app and create a route for you, and a “Call Place” tab that contains the location’s telephone number. In case you are indecisive about what to search for when first opening the app, you can check out the “Popular Searches” tab, listing the ten most recently searched products.

This Price Patrol app is useful all year-round. The app is user friendly, the graphical interface is clean and runs smoothly, the information is accurate and the search engine features enough brand name products for users to search for nearly anything at any store. It will show you deals in popular stores like Wal-Mart, GameStop, Radio Shack, Best Buy, Barnes & Noble, Sears and Lowe’s. You will not likely find local “mom-&-pop” stores in this app.

The wide variety of product categories include animal supplies, electronics, hardware, office supplies, toys, sporting goods and car equipment. Although the app contains a lot of categories, it would be more impressive if more food grocery items were featured in the search engine. This element would really separate itself from other shopping search applications. Nevertheless, this is a great app to use if you simply want to find the best deals for products in your area.

Platinum QR [Android App Review]

More and more businesses, websites, periodicals, etc. are using QR codes. Are you? Do you even know what a QR code is? Well, this is what is Wikipedia pages has to say:

“QR code (abbreviated from Quick Response Code) is the trademark for a type of matrix barcode (or two-dimensional barcode) first designed for the automotive industry in Japan.

A QR code consists of black modules (square dots) arranged in a square grid on a white background, which can be read by an imaging device (such as a camera) and processed using Reed-Solomon error correction until the image can be appropriately interpreted; data is then extracted from patterns present in both horizontal and vertical components of the image.”

I have tried a few QR related apps and I must say that Platinum QR is very nice. One thing I really like about the app is its simplicity. The app is easy to use and gets right to the point. The app is free and there are no ads to bother you and get in the way.

When you first turn on the app, it goes directly to the scanner- focus the QR code in your camera, the app will take a scan and open the code.  The app will open up the code within the app, which is nice.  The app keeps a history of your scans, allows you to bookmark or favorite the ones you want, and easily share these codes with friends. The app definitely makes it easy to access the codes you need.

Scanning QR codes is of course the main function but what if you need to generate your own code?  Platinum QR can create QR codes for text, phone numbers, emails, contacts, location, urls, or sms. Simply choose the type of item you are going to make a code of,  input the information and boom you have a QR code. Once the code is generated, you can edit and share it will your friends.

The last two items to mention is the app has a button to turn on your flash, just in case you need extra light when scanning a QR code. You can also load a QR code from photos stored on your SD card.

Platinum QR is a very powerful and useful QR code reading app for Android devices. I found it very easy to use and experienced no problems with the app.  Every one should have a QR reader on their phone, so if you are in the market for a QR scanner, give Platinum QR a try.
