The Hope We Seek [Android App Review]

As I put together this review, I am trying to figure out if is a book review or an app review. I think it is a little of both. Nonetheless it is intriguing.

If I had to describe the app in one word, it would be impressive. I had not heard of the author Rich Shapero before seeing this app. If you are like me, then you can head over to his website (see below) to learn a little more about him. For the purpose of this app, I am not going to go into the story line;  I am going to focus on the app and my experience with it.  This app  was tested on a Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1;  you are going to need a tablet to enjoy this book/app.

I enjoy reading  a good book and I must say I really enjoyed using this app to read the book The Hope We Seek.  This app is very unique in that is combines three different elements to form a great experience. In the app, you can read the story, hear the music, and view the art.  The app is broken up into layers, which you need to peel away to find.  When you first turn on the app you will see the cover art but also visible is a seam and it is through this seam that you can discover the other layers.

  1. First off is the story. Here you simply swipe left and right to read and turn the pages.
  2. Second is the Songs from the Big Wheel. You can read the lyrics and listen to the songs.
  3. Third is the art or illustrations.

If you want to go back at any time, simple pinch the seam.

For those that want a more traditional approach, simply touch the screen and a cool menu will appear. In this menu, you can see how the story, music, and art line up together.  For example, the song Bring Me More is connected to the first three chapters.  Thorugh this menu you can easily go to any chapter, song, or piece of art.  You can read  background information about the book, author, music, and art.

Finally in the top right hand corner, there is a secondary menu. In this menu you can still pick the story, music or art you want to view but you can adjust the volume, brightness, and most importantly the font size of the book!

At the beginning of this review, I used the term impressive and rightly so. This app does a great job of combing three different media to give the reader a rich and unique experience. Enough of my words though.  Head over to Google Play and download this free app and see for yourself. Could this be the future of books on tablets?

Finding Great Websites with a Click of a button [Android App Review]

With so many websites out there today it is hard to figure out which ones are the best. Well there is a new Android and iOS app called pickWEB which helps to categorize websites and give you an easy to use interface to search these sites.  For this review, I tested the Android version of the app.

The app is very easy to use and laid out very nicely. When you first turn it on, you will be asked to register. Registration is used save your settings, favorites, and seeing sites from other countries. If you do not want to register, you can run the app is demo mode.  After this you will enter the app proper.

There are 3 main buttons in the header, Catalog, Links, and Search. In Search you chose which search engine you wan to use for your search. In Links, there are 15 pre setup sections or groups of links. Here you will find your favorites, and My pickWEB. Finally in Catalog, you will find the meat of the app.  Here there are 18 sections and then a huge number of subsections for each one.  There are so many categories listed you will be able to find websites for almost anything.

When you click on a category, it will take to you a website that has the screenshots of the different websites listed. I tested the app on my Android phone, but I think this app would work better on the larger screen of a tablet.  Pinch to zoom works great and is needed on the small screen.  On the developer’s website it says that all websites are hand picked and updated frequently.

This app is a handy tool to find websites that interest you. Being able to setup favorites is key since most of us probably do not want to research website ever time we go online. Overall this is not a bad app but I think the frequency of which the websites listed are updated will be a key factor in whether or not this new app really takes off.

Review: 1Mobile Market is similar to the app store in many ways and in others it’s different.  1Mobile markets their app as one of the fastest to get your apps and games. I would agree with them as this app flies and shows almost no sign of lag. The market is broken down into various tabs like Categories, which breaks down into sub categories, features, local top, and local new, global top and global new. These tabs add features not present in the Google Play store. There is also a nice search function which was able to pull up everything I threw at it without any issues.

The app feels similar to Google Play as it uses similar color schemes but is set up different enough for the user to recognize that it’s a different market. The apps download in a very similar way to the play store and this app also sends you notifications when an app needs to update. Overall this is a nice substitute for the official play store and it works at a faster speed.

So if you need an alternative to Google Play, maybe on devices that do not support Google Play, give this new market a shot.
