Did you ever want to learn to play the piano,  seriously play? If so, then I can recommend you try flowkey: Learn Piano. This free app will definitely help you learn. All of my kids played the piano – yes we made them go. Now if they had this app to accompany those lessons, maybe they would have liked it better. In all fairness, my daughter really enjoys playing and did well in last year’s state competition. 🙂 Piano Nadu has written a detailed flowkey review which analyses their Free vs Preimum plan, Different modes & features, etc.

Now I am not musician but I tried the app and after one session, I was playing – it was rough but still playing. This  app is well designed and easy to use and allows you can play/practice at your own pace.

Now that I have given you my quick two cents, lets get into the particulars. The app is free but if you want to really get into playing the piano you can purchase the premium service which will give you access to their extensive library of songs. The premium service is broken down into 1, 3, 12 or lifetime memberships.

The app runs on Android tablets or a large screen device. It is also recommended you have a piano. There are a lot of apps out there which allow you to play directly on your phone/tablet, not this one. The app will show you how to play and provide lessons to practice but you really need a real piano or keyboard.

When you first start the app you will need to create an account. It will ask you if you have a piano or not. If you say no, it will show your some recommendations on other apps to use. Once this is done, it is time to play.

The free account will get you going and provide eight songs you can try. The final thing you need to set up is the microphone on the tablet. You need to microphone on so the app can hear you play when you do the lessons. This is really quite neat feature. Within each lesson, you will watch a video on what you will be playing, then you will play along with the video. If you get the notes correct, the app will let you know, if not, you will start over.  So the app listens to the notes you play and can tell if you are playing them correctly or not.

Within the app there are the following courses: Intro to Piano, Chords and Pop Piano, with Reading Sheet Music (coming soon). For each course, there are a number of lessons. The app keeps track of which you have completed and which you are still working on. I have played them in order but I think you can switch around if you like.

Once you feel ready, then you can head over to the app music library and found some songs to download and play. The music library has a ton of songs from such genre as pop hits, classical music, film and TV, games, evergreen, rock, R&B, jazz and more. You can search for songs to play and can easily access any songs you are currently working on from the menu.

Flowkey is a serious app for anyone looking to learn to play the piano. The app give you professionally done courses and lessons that are  easy and intuitive to follow. Using this app and some practice you too will be tinkling the ivory!
