Probably one of the best features of most Android smartphones is that you can use it as a flashlight. I know that I have used this feature more than once. On some models, this is built in while others you will probably need to download an app.

In today’s review, I am looking at Sasha Morse Flashlight, a free app available on the Android market. Since this is a free app it is supported with some in app ads but so far I have not found that overly obtrusive.

The app will work on Android phones as long as there is a flash on the device.

Overall the app is simple to use and straight forward.  To use the flashlight as is, simply tap the slide on the on screen switch.  Tap it again to turn off.

Now the neat and different component of this app is that it has Morse code built into it.

For those not familiar, “Morse code is a method of transmitting text information as a series of on-off tones, lights, or clicks that can be directly understood by a skilled listener or observer without special equipment. The International Morse Code encodes the ISO basic Latin alphabet, some extra Latin letters, the Arabic numerals and a small set of punctuation and procedural signals as standardized sequences of short and long signals.”  (Source: Wikipedia)

To access the Morse code section, you need to tap on the Sasha Lab icon on the flashlight. It will open up a small tab which reveals a virtual straight key machine.

The app allows a few options on how you use the Morse code. You can tap out the message you want directly. You can, in the space provided, type out your message then hit the switch and the app will automatically send that message out in Morse code. Finally the app has some preset messages you can use.

This is a fun app and can be useful if you are in distress. Most folks do not know Morse code or even use it much anymore but the SOS message is pretty universal. I see this app as something kids can use to play with or so a neat tool while camping or hiking.  What uses do you see?

So if you are in need of a flashlight app for your Android device, Sasha Morse Flashlight is a nice option.
