When I hurt my back, folks were recommending that I try yoga to help strengthen it. I thought they were crazy. I had never done yoga before. If you are like me and wanted to try yoga but did not know where to start, then the iOS app, Handy Yoga, might be what you need.

Handy Yoga from Iurii Cherkashyn, is a simple yoga studio app. It is a free app, with no ads. There is one IAP.  You can use the app on an iPhone/iTouch but I like it better on the larger screen.

The app is easy to use and nicely laid out. It is bright, colorful, and filled good photos and videos to demonstrate the various yoga positions. You can use it offline but if you want to get more information at times, the app directs you to a wiki page online.

General Features:

  • 12+ Custom Programs
  • 600+ Photos
  • 100+ Various Poses and Asanas
  • Upcoming Programs for Seniors, Infants, Backache Relief
  • Purchase programs: Stretches and Strength Complex One
  • Many features in development

When you open the app, you start in the program window. Your choices are Office Warm Up, Simple Warm Up, and Surya Namaskara. When you click on one, it opens up a series of videos showing you the different moves. You can also look at still photos. The videos nicely explain what you are doing and shows you how to do it.

You can also view the individual positions called Asanas. There is a small explanation under each photo and a link to a wiki page.

For me the best way to use this app is to view the view and then repeat the program, having the mobile device propped up to my hands are free. I should also mention you can use the built in calendar to set reminders for workouts.

Overall is this a very useful app and one that a newbie at yoga (like me) could understand and follow. So get you mat and try some yoga today.
