This is the game that started it all for me. I had never played the board game but when I first say this on the market, I remember saying ‘wow a board game put in digital format, what a great idea.’ I did not have my iPad at the time so I began looking for other board games to play. Well I have an iPad now and if you have been following me for any time, you know that I really enjoy playing all types of digital board games. Euro style games are my favorite.
Puerto Rico HD has been out for many years but is still a favorite among boardgamers. The app has seen a few updates over that time and rarely is on sale. If you enjoy board games and/or Puerto Rico specifically then you will really enjoy this game. I know I have.
If you have not played before, the game comes with a very good tutorial and provides very helpful hints (by clicking the ? button during the game). I have used that button many times. After playing a couple of times, you should get a handle on it. If you ever played San Juan for iOS then you should have an idea on what to do.
The goal of the game is to grow your plantation and have the most victory points at the end of the game. You will need to plant crops, buildings to support and harvest them, and then ship them off to market. You will need to build fields and appropriate production buildings and then manage colonists to work in the various locations. These is a lot to do in the game but it is a lot of fun.
Each round, each player will have a different role such as settler, mayor, builder, craftsman, trader. Each of these roles will have a different effect. If you enjoy worker placement games, then Puerto Rico HD needs to be on your iPad.
There is a plenty of help in the game and over game layout works well. The game keeps stats (if you care), and you can vary the AI speed if you want. I really cannot say enough about the game. It really is an excellent example of how a board game can be ported onto mobile.
